The Ofotfjord ( in Norwegian called Ofotfjorden ) in Nordland County (Norway ) is 78 km long and up to 553 meters deep. The Ofotfjord empties into the bay like vestfjord. The landscape Ofoten is named after him. The port city of Narvik is located on its eastern (inner) end. The fjord is surrounded by up to 1,700 meters high mountains, which are wooded to a height of about 500 meters, mostly with birch trees. Fish are plentiful, especially cod, mackerel (summer and autumn) and herring ( in winter).

History

In April 1940, the city of Narvik during the battle of Narvik scene of fierce naval battles between destroyers of the Navy, which had brought on 9 April as part of Operation Weserübung mountain troops for the occupation of Narvik, and led by the battleship HMS Warspite armed forces of the Royal Navy.
