ÅŒfunato, Iwate

Ofunato (Japanese大船 渡 市, -shi ) is a city in Iwate Prefecture on Honshu, the main island of Japan.

Geography

The municipality is located on the Pacific Ocean along the Sanriku Riasküste with many deeply cut bays. This and the nearby coastal mountains rising reinforce the effects of tsunamis.

Ofunato is located southeast of Morioka and northeast of Sendai.

History

The community was named for Ofunato city ( shi) on 1 April 1952.

The area was devastated by the 1896 Meiji Sanriku Earthquake - by one of the world's highest at 38.2 m waves.

Ofunato was taken after the Tohoku Earthquake of 2011 by a 23.6 m -high tsunami. Approximately 3600 homes were completely or partially destroyed. Until May 20, 314 dead and 150 missing persons were counted.
