Ogive

Ogive ( from French, from Latin augere " amplify " ) is in the French language for the Gothic cross rib of the ribbed vault, of which the earlier, now obsolete designation for ogival architecture Gothic architecture derived.

The word was later adopted for the longitudinal section similarly shaped profiles of peaks ballistic missiles long, missiles, aircraft or floating bodies, which should have a very low (air) resistance in their locomotion. Here we mean by the term ogive a tapered streamlined body of revolution (see Haacksche ogive ). Furthermore, the term is used in connection with so-called atraumatic needles lumbar puncture or spinal anesthesia.

The typical form of the Gothic ogive was finally the occasion to appoint a curved surface shape of glaciers after the style element.
