oikos International

Oikos International - students for sustainable economics and management is an international student organization ( NGO ) that aims to increase awareness of sustainable development among future decision-makers by students is trying to raise awareness for long-term, prudent approach. History

Oikos was founded in 1987 as a local student organization at the University of St. Gallen in Switzerland by the students Paschen von Flotow, Kalle Gernandt, Athos dust and Guido Boller. The founding board consisted of Prof. Dr. Hans Christoph Binswanger and Prof. Dr. Hans Ulrich. It was originally under the name " oikos - The environmental economics student initiative at the University of St. Gallen " out, where the focus was on environmental issues in the economy. During the next few years oikos has its range extended to lectures, workshops and conferences to integrate environmental issues into the curricula of economics courses. oikos was a driving force for the establishment of many organizations, including the " ÖBU - Swiss Association for Environmentally Conscious Management ", the " oikos Foundation " and the "Institute for Economy and the Environment " at the University of St. Gallen.

The " Oikos - Foundation for Economy and Ecology " was founded in 1990.

1997 oikos began its activities at the international level to expand and strengthen the ecological and social awareness not only among the students in St. Gallen, but also in the Faculties of Economics and Management in the world. Throughout this process, oikos expanded his focus on social issues in the economy.

1998 four new chapters (local groups) were established: oikos Cologne, Prague oikos, oikos International as an umbrella organization, with headquarters in St. Gallen. Since then, many new chapters have been added and others have dissolved. Nevertheless, oikos International is a stable network with currently 30 chapters of which most are in Europe. Since 2006, the representatives of the Chapter and the oikos Foundation meet regularly with the President and the Board of oikos International, to discuss further goals. In 2009, there were 30 chapters on 4 continents, in which students are committed to oikos.

Objectives

Increasing the empowerment of future leaders in sustainable development is the main objective of oikos. To achieve this goal will oikos:

  • Promote attention to sustainable alternatives and challenges with attention to students of economics and management
  • Not only support their skills in long-term analysis of economic, environmental and social trends, but also implement sustainable -driven innovations
  • Create an institutional support for these learning processes, by means of the integration of sustainability issues into teaching and research

Etymology of the name

Oikos is the Greek root word of "economy " and " ecology". The word was chosen as the name to combine these two concepts. Oikos ( ancient Greek οἶκος ) in ancient Greece was the household or the house and was the center of life. The term " economics " is derived from the ancient Greek word οἰκονόμος ( oikonomos ). It consists of the ancient Greek οἶκος ( oikos ) "house" and νόμος ( nomos ) " Act " means and housekeeper or host that the connection to the term " economy" produces. Organizational structure

The practical work of oikos takes place under the umbrella of the international network " oikos International" in local working groups, called "Chapter ". This connects oikos global thinking with local action, according to the motto "Think global, act local ".

The working groups

The spread around the world, each chapter are associated with a university, where the members do not necessarily need to study at this university. The chapters are independent legal entity ( registered associations in Germany ), whose statutes are in conformity with the Articles of oikos International. Each chapter is headed by an elected annually at the General Meeting, Board of Directors and supported by an advisory board, whose members are usually elected every 2 years. To ensure the stability of the individual chapter must fulfill certain conditions that are prescribed in the Articles of oikos International. Therefore, a newly painted at first chapter is "Chapter in accession ", until it reaches the stability that it needs for a sustainable and successful work. The admission of a new Chapters and status change from "Chapter in accession " to the " Chapter " decide the representatives of all the Chapter on the " Legislative Meeting ". This is an international membership meeting, which takes place during one of the bi-annual international meeting. Twice a year, in spring and autumn, to meet members of all chapters to " Spring Meeting " or " Autumn Meeting". Oikos International

Oikos International is the umbrella organization of oikos, by the International Board of Directors ( " Executive Board" ) and the President or the President is headed. The members of oikos International remain members or their local oikos Alumni Chapter.
