Ólafsfjörður
Ólafsfjörður is a trading town in the municipality Fjallabyggð in the region Norðurland eystra. On 1 January 2009 it had 850 inhabitants.
Geography
Ólafsfjörður is located in the north of Iceland on the peninsula of the same name Tröllaskagi Fjord, a western tributary of the Eyjafjörður. To the south is the lake Ólafsfjarðarvatn, which is connected via the Ólafsfjarðará with the fjord.
History
Ólafsfjörður was due to lying in front of the place fishing grounds since the late 19th century, an important fishing village. In 2006, a merger of the formerly independent municipality Ólafsfjörður ( Isl Ólafsfjarðarbær ) was decided with Siglufjörður. The community was given the name Fjallabyggð.
Twinning
With Hillerød in Denmark, a town twinning is maintained.
Tourism
Between October and April you can in the mountains around the resort skiing.
Traffic
Since 1991, a 3.4 km long tunnel leads south into the Eyjafjörður. From 2006 to 2010, the tunnel was built between Héðinsfjarðargöng Ólafsfjörður and Siglufjörður.
The distance to Reykjavík is 414 km of roads.
