Between Hernando de Saavedra, governor of Honduras and the governor of Nicaragua, Pedrarias Davila, a dispute erupted around the rich gold deposits. After several skirmishes between rival groups, the area was eventually controlled by Spain and founded the city of San Jorge de Olancho. After the indigenous population had been abused and unexpectedly rebelled, the Spaniards attacked the village and destroy it completely. The survivors of this disaster emigrated to other areas, as it had done a century earlier their ancestors. Some founded the city of Juticalpa, and moved to San Jorge de Olanchito and Truxillo.

In the course of the years some people moved to the left bank of Aguan River, and on the track, which became the home village Agalteca a place they called " San Jorge de Olancho " (The New ). With the relocation of all residents of the city to the new location, it took its name " San Jorge de Olanchito ", and the old site was then used as the "Old City" or " San Juan El Sevillano " known.
