Old states of Germany

The ancient states of the Federal Republic of Germany are the counterpart of the so-called new states that joined with the reunification on 3 October 1990, the Federal Republic. In the German National Library, they operate as a Western (federal) countries.

The old countries

These are the ten German states

  • Baden- Württemberg (merged on April 25, 1952 in Baden ( South Baden ) Württemberg- Baden and Württemberg -Hohenzollern )
  • Bavaria,
  • Bremen,
  • Hamburg,
  • Hesse,
  • Lower Saxony,
  • North Rhine -Westphalia,
  • Rhineland -Palatinate,
  • Saarland ( accession on 1 January 1957),
  • Schleswig -Holstein.

As a synonym of the term West Germany is often used, but not permit any further interpretations.

Berlin

Whether West Berlin belonged to the old countries, depends on the context because it is due to the Quadripartite Agreement, its status has been controversial, although socially very closely associated with the then Federal Republic of Germany, but in terms of belonging to the Federal Republic.

For the citizens of the GDR West Berlin was the "Island in the Red Sea ."
