Old Sultan

The old Sultan is an animal tale (ATU 101, 103, 104). It is in the Children's and Household Tales of the Brothers Grimm in place 48 (KHM 48).

Content

The old Sultan is an old toothless dog that wants to shoot his master. The Wolf knows what to do and robbed mock the small child, and the dog brings it back. Now the farmer treats him well. The wolf thinks he can steal with impunity for a sheep, but the dog, it tells the farmer who thrashes the wolf. But can the wolf the dog from pig call to a duel. When the old dog with an old three-legged cat turns up there, keeping the other two to be stretched tail of the cat for a saber and her limp for picking up stones. They hide, but his ears betray the pig in the foliage. Ashamed includes the wolf peace.

Origin

Grimm's version of 1812 is the oldest evidence of the frequent in Central and Eastern Europe, combining the story of the old dog (ATU 101) as a trigger for the war of the animals (ATU 103, 104 ) in its normal form with victory of the weak over the strong.

In Heinrich Steinhöwels fable The Wolf and the hungry dog a dog can be a wolf to get three times sham sheep steal better food, while he denied him another rewarded out of loyalty to his master. The fabric is of ancient origin.

Parodies

In Janoschs parody of the farmer wants to shoot the faithful dog, the night creeps from homesickness to the yard and wants to warn him of the fire, but all burn. A manga was published in 2012 by Anike Hage.
