Old Town Square (Prague)

The Old Town Square ( Town Square? / I, also called " Old Town Market") is the central market square of the Old Town of Prague. It occupies more than 9000 square meters.

History

The historic Town Hall, the Tyn Church, the Hussite Church of St. Nicholas in Old Town, the Kinsky Palace, the house " Stone Bell " and other interesting buildings surround the square. Amid the Old Town Square stands the monument to Jan Hus. In the cellars of the houses that surround this place, Romanesque and Gothic foundations are to be found. Then stand Renaissance, Baroque and Rococo buildings.

On June 21, 1621 a total of 27 participants in the uprising of the Estates of 1618 were executed at the Old Town Square.

Old Town Hall

Located on the southeast corner of the Old Town Square Old Town Hall ( Staroměstská radnice ) with the astronomical clock ( horologe ). The movement was built in 1410 by clockmaker Mikuláš z Kadaně according to the plans of Jan Šindel. The town hall itself was decorated in the Gothic style with round and pointed arch windows.

Noteworthy is the bay window with 5/8-Schluss, which belongs to a started around 1360 Gothic oriel chapel. It was consecrated to the Virgin Mary in 1381. While the tracery of the spandrel and with crabs ( crockets ) crowned Gable ( pediment ) are still largely original, the column figures are among the canopies an ingredient of the 19th century. Only the statue on the left corner of the building is a copy of 1381 created sandstone figure ( original in the Museum of the City of Prague ).

During the Prague Uprising in May 1945, the Town Hall was badly damaged, but completely restored after the war. The neo-Gothic cultivation had to be canceled. In its place is now a small park with a memorial to the fallen of the uprising.

Tyn Church

1365 began with the construction of the three-aisled Gothic Tyn Church ( Týnský chrám ), also called " Church of Our Lady before Tyn " ( Kostel Panny Marie před Týnem ) called. Only in the second half of the 15th century and the beginning of the 16th century, the towers (Adam and Eve ) were completed, which is not the same and one of which is 80 m high. 1390 was created on the north portal in Peter Parler lodge the tympanum. Right of the main altar is the tomb of acting at the court of Emperor Rudolf II Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe from the year 1601.

The seen from the market right tower is a little thicker than the left. The rights commonly referred to as Adam, who left as Eva. In the summer months Adam Eva shade, so Eva was in the Middle Ages as a warehouse for perishable foods.
