Olegario Víctor Andrade

Olegario Víctor Andrade ( born March 6, 1839 in Alegrete, Brazil, † October 30, 1882 in Buenos Aires ) was an Argentine writer, journalist and politician.

Life

During the political unrest ( May Revolution ), his family fled from their homeland Gualeguaychú ( Entre Ríos ) to Alegrete in Brazil. His parents died in 1845 Gualeguaychú as they tried to regain a foothold there. Funded and supported by a family friend, Justo José de Urquiza, Andrade was able to visit the Colegio del Uruguay in Concepción del Uruguay ( Entre Ríos ). This school was founded in 1849 by Urquiza and Andrade was one of the first students there.

1857 Andrade married at age 18. His livelihood, he played as a journalist; at times he also served as chief editor of the newspaper " Tribuna ". 1860/61 Andrade acted as private secretary to President Santiago Derqui.

In 1878 he became a deputy in the Argentine Chamber of Deputies for Autonomous Partido Paulista.

With 43 ​​years Olegario Victor Andrade died on 30 October 1882 in Buenos Aires and found his final resting place in the cemetery of La Recoleta ( Buenos Aires ).

Reception

The contemporary literary criticism was Andrade as one of the most important poets of Argentina. The Spanish writer Juan Valera presented Andrade on André Bello and José Joaquín de Olmedo. And the literary critic Marcelino Menéndez y Pelayo recommended to any reader Andrade's poems " ... recite loudly and sounding and donate them with cannon thunder of applause ." Today ( 2010) is his work - overloaded with thoughts of freedom and progress in Baroque -sounding rhetoric - judged rather mild.

Andrade's most important poems are Prometeo, dedicated to his role model Victor Hugo and by his own admission a " ... singing on the human mind " and his romantic progressive believing epic La Atlantida ( also inspired by Victor Hugo ) by trace the historical development of mankind tries.
