The community Ölfus ( Isl Sveitarfélagið Ölfus ) is an Icelandic community in the region Suðurland.

On 1 January 2009 Ölfus had 1997 inhabitants. The most significant development is the port city Þorlákshöfn with 1582 inhabitants, Árbæjarhverfi had 63 inhabitants.

Geography

The community Ölfus surrounds the community Hveragerði. West of Hveragerði is the level Hellisheiði, north of it lies the mountain Hengill volcanic system, with its outstretched. To the east of the municipality is the mouth of the Ölfusá, the longest river of Iceland.

The municipality is bordered on the southwest by Grindavíkurbær, to the northwest of Gardabær, Kópavogsbær, Reykjavíkurborg and mosfellsbær. To the northeast lies Grímsnes -og Grafningshreppur, in the east Flóahreppur and Sveitarfélagið Árborg.

Culture and sights

North-west of the main town of the municipality is the Buri Cave.
