Olof Celsius

Olof Celsius the Elder ( born July 19, 1670 in Uppsala, † June 24, 1756 ) was a Swedish botanist, linguist, Rune researcher and theologian. Significantly has been particularly his research on mosses. Its official botanical author abbreviation is " Celsius".

Life

Olof was the son of nature and linguist Magnus Nicolai Celsius and a brother of Nils Celsius, the father of Anders Celsius. He studied sporadically at Uppsala University, as he often was in economic difficulties. He received his degree he succeeded only because of the generous support by King Karl XI.

After a study tour of Europe, he was Adjunct 1699 at Uppsala University in 1703 and received a professorship of the Greek language. Ordained in 1706, he was from 1707 in addition manage a Präbendepfarrstelle. In 1715 he became professor of Oriental Studies, 1719 Dr. theol., 1727 Professor of Protestant Theology and 1736 (while maintaining the Chair ) Provost. Between 1711 and 1746 he had seven held the Rectorate of the University.

Celsius belonged since 1726 to the Royal Society of Sciences in Uppsala and since 1739, the founding year, the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Work

Celsius ' main field of research was the Oriental. He was considered the most talented Swedish philologist and published numerous studies on the history and culture of ancient Judaism. In addition, he was also involved in Swedish history and topography. Like his father, he worked intensively with the interpretation of runes and developed his work further. Thus he became one of the sharpest critics of Olof Rudbeck the Elder, who interpreted runes in a national romantic style.

In Europe, his work on the plants of the Bible was known. He put on an extensive collection of mosses and described this. He was a source of inspiration for Carl Linnaeus.

Carl Linnaeus named in his honor, the genus of the plant family Celsia the figwort family ( Scrophulariaceae ).
