Olustvere

Olustvere ( German: Ollustfer ) is a village in the Estonian community Suure -Jaani in Viljandi County. The village has 527 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2006).

History

Olustvere was first mentioned in a letter of 18 March 1424. The well-preserved manor Olustvere was built in its present form the end of the 19th century in the English Art Nouveau. From 1920 an agricultural school was housed therein.

Until October 22, 2005 Olustvere was an independent municipality, before it became part of the community Suure -Jaani.

Culture and sights

The manor Olustvere is now used as a tourist and conference center as well as a small museum. In addition, there are over 30 outbuildings which house a home economics school among others. The park of the manor house was probably built in the 19th century in the French style. Old linden, oak and ash, as well as a 10 km long avenue have been preserved from this period.
