The name is a symbolic reference to the Omer ( biblical reference to the sheaves at the first harvest in the spring ).

As early as 1949 there was a failed attempt to build a settlement point in Omer. Today's Omer goes back to a start-up in 1961.

In the 70s, Omer became one of the most attractive places in the Negev. Professors, doctors, freelancers and Industrial settled down and made it one of the richest cities of Israel. For many professors and researchers of the Ben Gurion University of the Negev Omer is preferred place of residence.

Omer consists primarily of single-family homes in a neat village, and thus provides a contrast to the surroundings with many more poor villages dar.

The city is bordered to the west by Beersheba, the regional central city ( Omer can be described as the satellite). To the south lies the Bedouin town of Tel Sheba, one of the poorest in Israel. North of the residential areas is a large industrial park, which was founded by the visionary industrialist Stef Wertheimer and also hosts an open museum. In the industrial park knowledge-intensive enterprises are housed, it is one of the most successful in Israel.

Omer is considered a model for later founded, also successful Negev towns Lehawim and Meitar.
