Omo–Tana languages

The Omo - Tana languages ( also somaloide languages or macro called Somali ) are a subgroup of the tieflandostkuschitischen languages , which in turn belong to the Cushitic languages , a primary branch of the Afro Asiatic languages.

All Omo - Tana languages outside the subgroup of Sam - languages are spoken exclusively in the area between Lake Abaya and Lake Turkana in southern Ethiopia and northern Kenya. This suggests that they have spread from there. From the Sam languages Rendille and bonuses in other areas of Kenya are spoken, and the Somali is spread from the eastern to Kenya to Djibouti on the whole Horn of Africa.

Research and classification history

The best researched - and speaker richest - ostkuschitischen languages are Somali and Oromo. For a number of other languages ostkuschitischer was initially disputed whether they are closer to the Oromo or Somali. Harold C. Fleming came in 1964 to the conclusion that the Rendille is closer to the Somali, and ordered the addition Bayso as the Somali related one. He called this language group as " macro - Somaliland " and proposed the following classification before:

  • Macro - Somali Bayso
  • Somali Rendille
  • Actual Somali.

Lionel M. Bender 1971 used the term " somaloide languages ". 1973 Bernd Heine added the language of the El Molo to this group. 1975 Advanced Hans -Jürgen Sasse the macro - Somali about the three languages Arbore, Dassanetch ( Galab ) and bonuses and a distinction between a Western ( Bayso, Rendille, Arbore, Dassanetch, El Molo ) and an eastern subgroup (bonuses, Somali ). Heine arranged in 1976 Rendille the eastern subgroup and integrated the Bayso than own northern branch. He also established the new name " Omo - Tana languages " by the names of rivers Omo and Tana; " Macro - Somali " or " somaloid " he refused, as those terms a special position of the Somali implied, which is not given from a linguistic point of view. 1978 Heine coined for the Eastern Omo - Tana languages the name Sam languages.
