Omohyoid muscle

The Musculus omohyoideus (Latin for " shoulder - hyoid muscle ") is a zweibäuchiger human skeletal muscle, which is involved in breathing (as accessory respiratory muscle) and during swallowing. The two bellies of the omohyoid are interconnected via an intermediate tendon, which in turn in the carotid sheath ( carotid ) radiates.

The omohyoid muscle originates in man with its lower belly ( venter inferior) at the top of the shoulder blade ( Margo superior) and has his approach over the upper abdomen ( Venter superior) to the body of the hyoid bone ( hyoid ). Is Innervated of because of its localization counted for sub- hyoid muscles muscle by Ansa cervicalis profunda, which is from the neck braid ( cervical plexus ).

Function

The muscle fixes the hyoid bone and draws it down. He serves as an auxiliary muscles of respiration and in swallowing and is involved in flexing the head and the neck joints. Due to its coalescence with the carotid sheath of muscle stretches in the contraction of the cervical fascia. Due to this effect on the fascia ( the fascia colli lamina praetrachealis ) he holds, especially in the upright posture, the internal jugular vein open to a vacuum.

Species specificities

In predators the muscle is not formed. In the other mammals of the muscle is usually not zweibäuchig. In horses, it arises from the thoracolumbar fascia in the shoulder area, in ruminants from the deep cervical fascia in the region of the last cervical vertebra. The approach is carried out on the body of the hyoid bone.
