On the Beach is the fifth, published in 1974 studio album by Neil Young. As a CD it was not published until 2003.

General

The album was recorded after Tonight's the Night, but released before this. Both albums share a depressed mood. After the successful studio album Harvest this album was a change of direction. How Tonight's the Night was On the Beach at the time of its publication was not a commercial success, but over time reached a high regard. The album was produced deliberately very simple and unpolished.

Songs

Add to Walk On Young busy with his critics, in Revolution Blues with Charles Manson, whom he had met years earlier. Vampire Blues is an attack on the oil industry.

On the Beach is a blues about the downside of fame. The song was covered by Radiohead, Golden Smog, and others.

Motion Pictures handled the new relationship with his girlfriend Carrie Snodgress.

Ambulance Blues finished the album. Young had inadvertently quoted the melody of Needle of Death by Bert Jansch. The song deals Youngs feelings about his critics, Richard Nixon and the state of CSNY. The line " Your pisses all just in the wind " was a quote from Young's manager about the inaction of the quartet.
