One-toothed shrew-mouse

The Shaw -Mayer- mouse ( Pseudohydromys ellermani or Mayermys ellermani ) is a living in New Guinea rodent species from the group of Altweltmäuse.

Features

The Shaw -Mayer- mouse differs from all other mice and rodents is that it only has a single molar per half of the jaw. With a total of only eight teeth she thus has the fewest among all rodents teeth.

These mice reach a head body length of 8.5 to 10 inches, which must be added a 10 to 11 centimeters long tail comes. My weight is around 17 to 21 grams. Their fur is colored light gray dark gray at the top and at the bottom, some animals have a white spot on the chest. Between the toes they have small webbed.

Way of life

These mice inhabit the highlands of north-eastern New Guinea 1400-2800 meters above sea level. Their habitat is forests.

About their life little is known. You are likely to be nocturnal, several animals were found under logs, where they presumably looking for food. They should primarily feed on insects.

Due to the large distribution range, the species is not endangered according to IUCN.
