XPS was released with Windows Vista and in the current version 3 of the. NET Framework for Windows XP, which has a built- XPS printer and XPS viewer. In March 2008, Microsoft released the Microsoft XML Paper Specification Essentials Pack 1.0 for Windows Vista, Windows XP and Windows 2003 Server.

2009, the standard Open XML Paper Specification ( OXPS ) was published by ECMA. This is not compatible with original XPS format. While Windows Vista and Windows 7 can deal only with XPS, Windows 8, both dominated and formats used by default OXPS.

Microsoft XPS or OXPS

With Windows 8, both XPS and OXPS files can be created and displayed (printed) are. The default file type of the Microsoft XPS Document Writer creates OXPS files. While the printer dialogue can when entering the file name, the file extension ". Xps " can be selected. The writer then creates an XPS file.

This can then be viewed on Windows XP, Vista and 7 with the XPS Viewer from Microsoft. The aforementioned earlier operating systems can not open files OXPS that goes only from Windows 8

Changing the file extension. Oxps in. Xps does not lead to success, because the formats are incompatible.
