Operation Artemis

Operation Artemis was a military mission of the European Union to support the UN mission MONUC in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

History

Once in May 2003 in the province of Ituri in the Democratic Republic of Congo unrest erupted first asked the UN Secretary-General French President unofficially to consider whether a deployment of military forces would be possible, with which the UN battalion of the United Nations before place could be supported from Uruguay. Order

The main tasks of the operation were the stabilization of the security environment and the improvement of the humanitarian situation in the provincial capital of Bunia. Leadership

Most of the forces placed France. Other participating countries were Austria, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Cyprus, Greece, Hungary, Ireland, Italy, Netherlands, Portugal, South Africa, Spain, and the United Kingdom. Germany participated in by two staff officers in the Operational Headquarters, by air transport with Transall C-160 and to the provision of capacity for retrieval of wounded.
