Operation Murambatsvina

Murambatsvina ( Shona for " waste disposal " ) is the informal name of an action ( with the official designation Operation Restore Order), which is conducted the government of Zimbabwe since 25 May 2005. Illegal built houses and market stalls in Harare, Bulawayo and other cities were destroyed with bulldozers and wheel loaders and burned.

Opposition politicians see the official reasons ( action against illegal constructions and trade, reduce the spread of infectious diseases ), however, as threadbare. They believe that the whole action is more dedicated to their followers, who are mostly found in the cities and their slums.

During this action, more than 3 million people were affected directly or indirectly by the effects of the destruction of tens of thousands of homes.
