Opisthorchis viverrini

Opisthorchis viverrini

Opisthorchis viverrini is a common in Thailand, Laos and Malaysia trematode that infects the bile ducts. Infections with Opisthorchis viverrini are a risk factor for cholangiocarcinoma, a tumor of the bile ducts.

Another well-known member of the order Ophistorchiida is the Chinese liver fluke ( Clonorchis sinensis). Infestation with him is called Clonorchiose and is also a risk factor for the development of this tumor.

The worm was first at a fishing cat ( Prionailurus viverrinus ) discovered in 1886 and first described by M. J. Poirier Distomum viverrini.
