Orange Park is a town in Clay County in the U.S. state of Florida with 8,412 inhabitants ( 2010).

Geography

Orange Park is situated on the left bank of the St. Johns River about 15 km north of Green Cove Springs and is bordered to the north directly to Jacksonville.

History

As a direct result of the American Civil War, the old " MacIntosh Plantation " went bankrupt, changed hands several times in the short term the owner and was for sale. After buying a few thousand Acres Orange Park was founded in 1877 by the Florida Winter Home and Improvement Company, its owners and investors from Boston, Massachusetts came. The acquired area was divided again, this time in different sized parcels to the house and Farmbau. At the same time the road system was created. To make the new settlement for buyers from the north attractive, orange trees were planted along the roads. Along the river were building a large hotel with a 400 m long wooden jetty, so that even the great steamships that sailed high up the St. Johns River in the north, could create one here.

Since those days, Orange Park has grown dramatically and has evolved as the northeastern gateway to Clay County. In 1995, a new town hall was built.

Religion

In Orange Park, there are 56 different churches from 16 different denominations. Among the belonging to a denomination churches the Baptist church is strongest with 18 churches. Furthermore, there are 7 to no denomination belonging churches ( as of 2004).

Demographics

According to the 2010 census, the then 8,412 inhabitants distributed to 3,880 households. The population density was 832.9 inh. / Km ². 75.9 % of the population were white, 14.8% African American, 0.3% Native American and 3.2% Asian Americans. 2.4% were members of other ethnic groups and 3.4% in different ethnic groups. 8.8% of the population were Hispanic or Latino.

In 2010, children under the age of 18 and 34.5 % of all households lived in 27.6 % of all households with persons at least 65 years. 63.9 % of households were family households (consisting of married couples with or without offspring or a parent with offspring ). The average size of a household was 2.33 persons and the average family size is 2.89 people.

22.2% of the population were younger than 20 years, 21.5% were 20-39 years old, 26.9 % were 40-59 years old and 29.4 % were at least 60 years old. The median age was 46 years. 47.6 % of the population were male and 52.4 % female.

The average annual income was $ 46,922, while 13.7 % of the population lived below the poverty line.

In 2000, English was the mother tongue of 95.52 % of the population spoke Spanish 2.87% and 1.61 % had a different mother tongue.

Economy

A significant industry, there is not. The main employment sectors are: education, health and social services: ( 19.7%), trade / retail ( 13.8%), finance, insurance and real estate ( 12.1%), future technology, management, administration ( 10, 2%).

Through the city runs the U.S. Highway 17 (SR 15). The nearest airport is Jacksonville International Airport ( 40 km north ).

The crime rate in 2010 was 223 points ( U.S. average: 266 points ) within the average range. There were two rapes, seven robberies, 27 injuries, 65 burglaries, 155 thefts and eleven car thefts.
