Orchestra Baobab

Orchestra Baobab is a band from Senegal. It was founded in 1970.

The group was formed by saxophonist Baro N'Diaye, founding members were the singers Balla Sidibe, Rudy Gomis, and Laye Mboup; the guitarist Barthelemy Attisso and Latfi Ben Geloune; the bassist Charlie N'Diaye; the drummer Mountaga Koite; and saxophonist Issa Cissokho. Ndiouga Dieng and Medoune Diallo played intermittently in the group, the members changed regularly. Later, the singer Thione Seck and his younger brother Mapenda Seck joined the band. Named the band for a club called Baobab in Dakar in which they occurred in the early hours every night together. To date, the Orchestra Baobab pleased in many parts of Africa but also in Europe very popular.

The group plays a mix of Cuban rumba and harmonies and rhythms from Casamance in southern Senegal, the Wolof with influences from northern Senegal, including the guitar riffs of Barthélémy Attisso of Togo. Between 1970 and 1985, the band recorded 20 LPs. In 1987, she broke up.

The re-release of their recordings in Europe and the related previous new popularity led to a reunion of the band in 2001. Orchestra Baobab toured Europe and took on a new recording with guest appearances by the Cuban singer Ibrahim Ferrer and the Senegalese Youssou N'Dour.

Published in 2002, Orchestra Baobab Album Specialist in all styles, which was produced by Youssou N'Dour. In October 2007, the new album was released Made in Dakar.
