Orchha State

Orchha was a princely state in the Bundelkhand region of British India. The name derives from the place was Orchha. According to legend, it was built around 1250. The first significant Raja was Rudra Pratap Singh ( 1501-1531 ), who built the fortress of Orchha. 1626 was built by inheritance, the Principality of Datia. Orchha was subjected to neither of the Great Mughals still of the Marathas, but Raja Udwat Singh (1689-1735) had to ask for help and assign them in 1732 a large part of his land Jhansi with the Marathas against the Mughal emperor. Raja Vikramajit (1776-1817) moved the capital to Tehri ( Tikamgarh ). From 1812 to 1947 Orchha was a British protectorate. Raja Hamir Singh (1848-1874) was raised in 1865 to the Maharaja.

The country had in 1941 including an exclave in Aurangabad an area of ​​5387 km ² and 361,000 inhabitants. On April 4, 1948, Orchha joined the prince Union Vindhya Pradesh and executed on 1 January 1950 the connection to India.
