Order of Public Instruction (Portugal)

The Order instrução Publica ( pt: Ordem da Instrução Pública ) was founded on 30 January 1919 the Portuguese President João do Canto e Castro and is awarded to nationals and foreigners as well as to institutions that have acquired merit in the field of education.

Order of classes

The Order comprises five classes

  • Grand Cross ( Grã Cruz )
  • Grand Officer ( Grande- Oficial )
  • Commander ( Comendador )
  • Officer ( Oficial )
  • Medal ( Medalha )

Order decoration

The religious character is gilded and shows in high oval shape two palm branches. It is the appearance with the French Ordre des Palmes Académiques comparable.

Carrying method

The Grand Cross is worn on a sash from the right shoulder to the left hip. Grand Officer and Commander decorate the award as a neck order. The first three classes carry an additional eight-pointed gold Breast Star. The breast star for commanders is silver plated. Officers wear the award with ribbon and a rosette on the left chest.

The ribbon is yellow.
