Order of Saint Joseph

The Order of St. Joseph (Italian Ordine del Merito sotto il titolo di S. Giuseppe di Toscana ) was a Tuscan Order of Knights and has already been established in 1514 as the Order of Merit.

Grand Duke Ferdinand III. resulted in this order on March 19, 1807 again, when he was Grand Duke of Würzburg. He renewed it in 1817 after the Duchy of Tuscany was reached in 1814 after 13 years in the possession of the founder. The Order was the second of its kind in the Duchy.

He was allowed to be presented to ministers, civil and military persons and also to foreigners. The commitment to Catholicism was one of the award conditions.

The Italian government raised the Order on March 18, 1860. But awardees were going to create him.

Order of classes

The Order had by the Statutes Amendment of March 18, 1817 three classes; the number of members was limited:

  • I. Class: Grand Cross 20 members
  • Second Class: Commander on 30 members with a view of hereditary nobility
  • III. Class: Knight on 60 members.

Grand Master was the reigning Grand Duke.

Order decoration

All cross points of the six-armed, white enamel cross with gold edging are staffed with a total of twelve small gold balls. In the cross angles are three red enameled rays with gold edging.

The oval medallion shows on the front in gold an image of St. Joseph with the inscription UBIQUE similis as a religious motto. On the back are the letters SJF ( Sto Josepho Ferdinandus ) and the year in 1807. The upward arm of the cross is connected to a short, red enameled piece of tape on a gold openwork crown with support ring.

Ribbon and carrying method

The ribbon is red with a wide border strip on both sides. The Great Cruiser place this order as a sash over the right shoulder to the left hip side. The Commander's Cross of the Order is worn around the neck, by the Knights in the buttonhole or as a breast star on the left.

For the most part, a silver cross breast star of the same shape and style, but without the crown. On special occasions, the Grand Cross is worn as a Collar of around the neck. The chain consists of golden rosettes and drafted in identical terms gemstones. The stones are set in a red enameled part flame -like right and left.

The Order Today

The order was revitalized in Tuscany in 1972 as the Order of Merit, is still active and distinguished personalities who have distinguished themselves by their special commitment to art and culture.
