Order of the Netherlands Lion

The Order of the Netherlands Lion was founded on 29 September 1815 by King William I of the Netherlands and is the highest civil order of merit in the Netherlands. Grand Master is the reigning monarch who makes the appointments under the responsibility of the competent Ministers.

This Order can be awarded to individuals with exceptional services rendered to the community. Above all, artists, scientists and successful athletes will be awarded this medal. The class of the Grand Cross is heads of state and the royal princes, after they have completed their 18th year, are reserved.

Order of classes

The Order of the Netherlands Lion has three classes:

  • Grand Cross
  • Commander
  • Knight

A fourth class, the brotherhood of the Order was extinguished in 1994 and has been deleted.

Order decoration

The medal decoration is a eight-pointed cross of St. John goldgerändertes of white enamel. The cross peaks bear little golden bullets. Between the arms of the letter "W" in gold. The round central shield on both sides in blue enamel and is caught in a golden edge. One side shows the upright Dutch lion in gold. The other side shows the religious motto " Virtus nobilitat ".

Ribbon and carrying method

The ribbon is dark blue and has the sides a orange stripe. The carrying method is for knights in his buttonhole, as a neck medal at the commanders and the big cruiser wear it as a sash over the right shoulder toward the left hip side.
