Order of the Redeemer

The Savior Medal (Greek Τάγμα του Σωτήρος, Tagma tou Sotiros ) was founded on 31 July 1829 the Greek National Assembly, provided by King Otto I on 20 May 1833 Statutes.

History

After the long struggle for freedom against the Ottoman Empire in 1830 Greece gained its independence from Turkish suzerainty and was declared an independent kingdom. Prince Leopold of Saxe -Coburg and Gotha, later King of the Belgians, rejected the Greek crown, which was then transferred in 1832 to the Prince Otto of Bavaria, son of King Ludwig I..

Even before the arrival of King Otto I Wittelsbach donated the fourth Greek National Assembly in 1829, the Redeemer Order. The Order was to commemorate the deliverance of the country from the Turkish yoke.

Order of classes

The Order comprises five classes and the number of members is limited:

  • Grand Cross (12 )
  • Grand Commander (30 )
  • Commander ( 70)
  • Cross in Gold (240 )
  • Silver Cross ( unlimited)

First, the order was awarded only to Greeks who had distinguished themselves in the struggle for freedom. Later, a ceremony for exquisite, the State paid service to home and to foreigners as a special award was made.

Order decoration

The religious character is since 1863 a white enameled goldgerändertes Hospitaller cross hanging on the golden crown. In the angles a grünemailierter oak and laurel wreath appears. The medallion shows on golden background the image of the Redeemer and is surrounded by a gold- bordered blue frost which bears the following motto in golden Greek Old Testament characters:

The Knights of the Silver Cross bear, as the name already reveals, a cross, in which all the parts are made ​​of silver that exist in the higher grades of gold.
