Oreophrynella

Oreophrynella quelchii

Oreophrynella is a South American genus of frogs and toads of the family of toads ( Bufonidae ). It was first described in 1895 by George Albert Boulenger.

Description

The pupils are aligned horizontally. The tongue is elliptically shaped, entire and free behind; the palate is smooth. There is no eardrum yet. The eustachian tube is extremely tiny. Fingers and toes are short, blunt and have no distinct webbed - but this is not true for the 2009 newly described species, O. seegobini to. The feet can grip, the inner toe is opponierbar and longer than the second. The coracoids and Präcoracoide are formed very strong. The first form in the middle of an extensive structure with the latter, and include on all sides a fairly small, circular foramen. A Omosternum does not exist. The sternum is cartilaginous. The diaphysis of the sacral vertebrae are greatly dilated.

Dissemination

The area of ​​the genus includes tepuis in the south of central Venezuela and the neighboring Guyana.

System

The genus Oreophrynella in 1895 first described by Boulenger as Oreophryne. The type species is Oreophrynella quelchii. But since a few days before the publication of the first description already O. Boettcher had the name Oreophryne used for another genus, suggested Boulenger in the same year still valid today changing the name in Oreophrynella ago.
