Orlando Pirates

Orlando Pirates are a South African football club from the city of Johannesburg. The club was founded in 1937 and is now one of the most famous clubs in South Africa. The home games are played at the Orlando Stadium.

History

The oldest club in the country was built in the time of the gold rush in South Africa. Local miners digging for gold in Gauteng, came together in Orlando and played football in their spare time. The first president in the club history was Buthuel Mokgosinyane who paid the beginnings of the Orlando Boys Club (the initial name of the club ) out of pocket. He financed the first jerseys for the team. Only in the 40s the name was Orlando Pirates at the official club name.

Especially in the 90's the club was very successful and won the CAF Champions League once (1995) and the South African Championship ( 1994).
