Orthogonal instruction set

A processor has an orthogonal instruction set when opcode, addressing and data type (sometimes number of operands ) can be combined as desired.

The creation of an orthogonal instruction set is desirable in so far as that it simplifies use of the available instructions. However, this quickly leads to large instruction sets.
