The genus Orthopoxvirus has a linear double-stranded DNA (130 to 375KB ) and has a size of 170-450 nm Orthopoxvirusinfektionen are referred to in the animal health legislation as a mammals smallpox.

- Orthopoxvirus vaccinia var equi = horse pox virus ( definitive hosts horse, donkey )
- Orthopoxvirus vaccinia var = Bubali buffalo pox virus ( definitive host Buffalo)
- Orthopoxvirus vaccinia var = cuniculi rabbit pox virus ( definitive host rabbit)
- Orthopoxvirus bovis var elefanti ( definitive host Elephant)
