The Reistenreks ( Oryzorictinae ) are a subfamily of the mammalian family of tenrecs ( Tenrecidae ). With about 20 species in three genera, they represent the most diverse group of tenrecs dar.
Reistenreks are small animals that live exclusively on Madagascar. They reach a body length 4-17 cm, in contrast to most other Tenreks they usually have a long tail, which reaches approximately the length of the body. The fur of these animals is gray-brown and lighter at the bottom. They are carnivores that inhabit different habitats.
There are three genera:
- The rice hustler ( Oryzorictes ) comprise two types, which remind her grave end of life to moles.
- The Kleintenreks ( Microgale ) are the most diverse group of about 18 species. These small animals often have a shrew -like appearance.
- The Wassertenrek ( Limnogale mergulus ) inhabits waters in the eastern part of Madagascar and is adapted to an aquatic lifestyle.
In often included the Erdtenrek is placed in this subfamily, but now rather out in a separate subfamily, Geogalinae.
