Oscar Chajes

Oscar Chajes ( born December 14, 1873 in Brody at Lemberg; † February 28, 1928 in New York) was an American chess player.

In 1909 he won in Excelsior, Minnesota, the U.S. Open. In 1910, he reached the 2nd place in Chicago, in 1911 as No. 3 / 4 tournament in New York. In Karlovy Vary ( Richard Teichmann won ), he has won prizes from the tournament for his victories over Savielly Tartakower and Julius Perlis. In 1913 he finished 3rd in New York and the 4/5 Place in another tournament in New York. Still in 1913, he occupied the split 4/5 Place in Havana.

1914 occupied Chajes in New York the divided 2 / 3 Course ( The reigning world champion Emanuel Lasker won ). In 1916 he finished 3rd in New York (winner was the next world champion Jose Raul Capablanca ).

In the next few years Chajes still played in numerous other tournaments with mostly only moderate success. In 1918 he played a tournament against Dawid Janowski (1918 in New York) and, among other things in Karlsbad, 1923.

After calculating the historical Elo rating in January 1919 he was in tenth place in the world rankings. His historical highest Elo rating was 2660 in January 1920.
