Oscar Ruggeri

Oscar Ruggeri ( born January 26, 1962 in Corral de Bustos ) is a former Argentine footballer.

Career

The central defender Ruggeri began his career at Boca Juniors Buenos Aires together with Diego Maradona. With Boca Juniors 1981, he was Argentine champion. In 1985 he moved to arch-rivals River Plate Buenos Aires and won the 1986 Copa Libertadores, the South American Champions League. The strong aerially strong Ruggeri was in the same year with the Argentine national football team in the FIFA World Cup 1986 Mexico World Cup. In 1988, Ruggeri in the Spanish first division on CD Logroñés and 1990 with Real Madrid Spanish football champions. In 1990 he moved to the Football World Cup 1990 in Italy back to Argentina to Velez Sarsfield. At the World Championships in Italy he conducted again the Argentine defense. His defense had in seven games conceded only four goals, but lost the final against Germany 0-1 through a penalty by Andreas Brehme.

In 1994, Ruggeri a third time at a FIFA World Cup finals. In the U.S., however, his team lost already in the second round against Romania. Ruggeri ended after a new record for national team after 97 caps his international career. Only Diego Simeone could break his record.

In 1997, he ended his career and has since worked as a football coach. From 1998 to 2001 he was responsible for San Lorenzo and then went to Mexico where he coached Chivas de Guadalajara ( 2001-2002) and UAG Tecos ( 2003). This was followed by brief exposure to Argentina (CA Independiente 2003), Spain ( Elche CF 2003/2004) and Mexico ( Club America 2004 ). In 2006 he was again coach at San Lorenzo in Argentina.
