Oslo Prison

The detention center Oslo and the Oslo jail (Oslo fengsel ) is Norway's largest prison with 392 inmates and 367 employees. The prison is part of the penal system of the Eastern Region ( Region Kriminalomsorgen Øst ) and is situated in the district of Oslo Grønland in Åkebergveien 11, 0134 Oslo, where there is also a police station in the immediate vicinity.

History

To 1841, the Norwegian Parliament passed a resolution on the construction of several new prisons and approved for the corresponding compositions, which also Botsfengselet in Christiania could be built. This decision was based on a proposal from the Norwegian Criminal Law Commission of 1837. The work on it started in 1844 and the prison was taken in 1851 in operation. The detention center had at the time of opening a capacity of 240 prisoners. The prison was operated according to the " Philadelphia " system, which meant that the detainees were kept in strict isolation in solitary confinement.

The first buildings of the former prison, the Botsfengselet were built by the German - Norwegian architect Heinrich Ernst Schirmer. The Botsfengselet then consisted of a main building with three wings. In 1886, the plant was expanded to a prison church with a separate wing, which was built by the Norwegian architect Jacob Wilhelm Nordan. From 1935 the former brewery building the Oslo " Aktiebryggeriet » ( Aktienbrauerei ) and later more areas were added yet. The former prison in 1975, after completion of appropriate extensions at the site of Botsfengselet and the completion of the renovation work, a part of the Oslo County Jail, which spawned today's Oslo state prison. The historic prison building of Botsfengselet is a listed building since that time. Around the Botsfengselet is the Grønland Park or bots Park ( Grønlands park - Botsparken ).

Sections

Section A, " Botsen »

The department consists of the old Botsfengselet original spelling: Bodsfængslet, also popularly known as " bodsen " or " Botsen ", which was opened in 1851 and served as a prison until 1970. The " bodsen " was after reconstruction and further extensions in 1975 a part of the new Oslo County Jail. The department consists of a large main building with a star-shaped aligned in fan shape wings and some smaller prison walls or dams, all of which are built of brick masonry. The entrance building of the old Botsfengselet gained great popularity in Norway by the Norwegian Olsen Gang films. The protagonist of this film, Egon Olsen (played by Arve Opsahl ), here was almost his second home and marched with his release through the main gate, and was always received in the alley to the entrance here by his buddies Benny and Kjell.

The old Botsfengelet currently houses partially the input to the gate "Bayer" on the Åkebergveien shall be utilized as the main entrance. The direct input to the department A can be used only by employees of the prison and of visitors. The grid portal at the inner end of the passage at the former main entrance is a popular motif in literature, film and photos.

Laterally to the old main entrance are two houses: the former apartment of the prison doctor (left side) and the house of the prison director (right). At the back of this palace is a long, low house that once served as the stables. It now houses the shop " Benny Butikk ", the products of the prisoners sold. On the left is the company kindergarten " Egon Barnehave " for employees in jail and for the employees of the nearby police station, which is located on the right side.

Section B, " Bayeren »

The B section 1934 attached to the existing prison. Previously, the premises were used as a brewery " Christiania share Olbryggeri » ( Christinana shares Brewery ). This was there from 1872 until 1925. Subsequently, it was from 1925 to 1931 still continued as " Aktiebryggeriet » ( Aktienbrauerei ) in Oslo. Section C, " Stifinner'n »

In the old rooms of the former prison hospital now lies in C. In these premises since 1992 and are currently housed inmates with drug problems and addictions. The relevant areas in the " Stifinner'n " operate from Oslo Prison in cooperation with the Norwegian treatment and rehabilitation clinic Tyrilistiftelsen.
