Osterwitz until the end of 2014 a municipality with 153 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2013 ) in the district of Germany in Styria. Geography

Location

The community Osterwitz lies in western Styria on the border of Carinthia and consists of a single homonymous cadastral.

The southern part of the municipality lies in the catchment of Bet ( h) conduct brook. This stream was also called Osterwitz Bach, Bach or hand Alps (1835, see map) Lassnitz. It ends at the open in the ( Low ) Laßnitz.

Geology

The community is fully crystalline of the Kor. The ridge on which the community center is located, consists of gneiss mica slate, which - except in the West - is surrounded by plate gneiss. Some pegmatites lie with quartz veins in it. West of the center are two strips of the very hard rock Eklogitamphibolit, consisting of rock, the two peaks called large and small Pöschlkogel between Laßnitz and Rettenbachferner. The valley of the Save river valley and the peak area of ​​the stock Kogels on the western boundary of the municipality consist of gneiss quartzite. History

The territory of Osterwitz later was initially settled by the Celts, the Slavs. The community name Osterwitz comes from the Slavic language, it is derived easter from the word ( sharp, pointed ), meaning Spitzberg ( from * Ostrovica ) Scharfenberg, sharp corner or edge., A name variant in old maps actually is to " Ostrowitz ". In another source, the name is translated as a settlement beside a towering mountain. Demographics

Parish Church
