Oswald Gomis

Oswald Thomas Colman Gomis ( born December 12, 1932 in Kelaniya, Sri Lanka) is an emeritus Archbishop of Colombo.

Life

After school at St. Joseph 's College in 1950, he entered the seminary. On February 3, 1958 he was ordained a priest and was active in the Catholic journalism in his country.

On July 17, 1968, he was by Pope Paul VI. appointed Titular Bishop of Mulia and appointed Auxiliary Bishop of Colombo. In 1995 he was appointed by Pope John Paul II appointed Bishop of the Diocese of Anuradhapura; 2002 he was appointed Archbishop of Colombo.

On 16 June 2009, Pope Benedict XVI. be for reasons of age that emerges resignation and appointed the former secretary of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments, Archbishop Albert Malcolm Ranjith, his successor.

From 1998 to 2004 Gomis was chairman of the Catholic Bishops' Conference of Sri Lanka, 2001-2005 Gomis was Secretary General Community Asian Bishops' Conferences ( FABC - Federation of Asian Bishops' Conferences ). In addition, since 2002 he is Chancellor of the University of Colombo. He is the founder of numerous educational and social initiatives church.
