Ottawa Civics

The Ottawa Civics were an ice hockey team from Ottawa, Ontario, which was active in the North American World Hockey Association (WHA ). After the Denver Spurs, who had taken up the game operation for 1975/76 season, with a rescue attempt in January 1976 relocated to Ottawa, one played there 15 days left before the game operation was completely set.

History

After the Denver Spurs was advised by the low attendances in Denver into financial difficulties during the 1975/76 season, team owner Ivan Mullenix pulled the emergency brake and planned the franchise to Ottawa to sell. On January 2, 1976, the date of removal to Ottawa. The team should be taken over by the " Founders Group".

The response of the audience was very neat, and so one of the two games at the Ottawa Civic Centre was even attended by 9,500 spectators. However, the " Founders Group" did not make it to pay the required sum, and so came after just 15 days on January 17, the final out for the team, which was started in Ottawa still in the jerseys and the logo of Denver. After only eight months, the history of the Spurs / Civics franchise ended in the WHA. They were the first franchise in the history of the WHA, which had to suspend the operation of gambling during the current season.

After the abandonment of the franchise, the players were all declared free agents and divided into a dispersal draft among the other teams in the league.
