Otto Devrient

Otto Devrient ( born October 3, 1838 in Berlin, † June 23, 1894 in Stettin) was a German actor and playwright.

Life

Devrient was a son of actor Eduard Devrient Philipp. With 18 years Devrient could debut at Court Theatre Karlsruhe. Later several engagements followed at the stages of Stuttgart, Berlin and Leipzig.

1863 Devrient returned back to his first place of activity where, until 1873, belonged to the ensemble. This year, he was engaged at the Court Theatre in Weimar as a character actor; later he worked there as a director.

1876 ​​saw Devrient in Weimar with his production of the entire Faust (Johann Wolfgang von Goethe ) a tremendous sensation and was able to repeat this performance for many years on an annual basis. Devrient called his "Faust" a mystery in two days' work and published it the following year under the title " Goethe's Faust ".

Appointed Supreme Director of the Court Theatre in Mannheim in 1876, Devrient in 1877 was appointed director of the new Frankfurt city theater, but found himself in February 1879 led to resign the office again, and lived on after he also in Berlin, Cologne and Dusseldorf 's "Faust" had brought to the stage, in Jena.
