Otto Heurnius

Otto Heurnius (also: van Heurne; van Horne, Heurn; * September 8, 1577 in Utrecht, † July 24, 1652 in Leiden ) was a Dutch physician.

Life

Heurnius Otto was the eldest son of eleven children of John and Christina Heurnius Beyer. He went with his father to Leiden, where he received his education and scientific training under the then rector of the Leiden Latin School Nicolaas Stochius ( 1534-1593 ). In that time not untypical age of 13 he enrolled on 2 May in 1590, the matriculation of the Leiden University to complete a degree in Liberal Arts. It was Peter Molinaeus (1568-1658) his formative teacher, who taught him so much philosophical knowledge that Heurnius philosophicae on 24 August 1599 the defense of the dissertation theses could obtain the degree of Master of Philosophy.

Alongside he graduated from medical studies under his father. His academic ambitions brought him on May 8, 1600 Place an order for a one-year teaching rhetoric. After he was appointed on 7 July 1601 for Doctor of Medicine, he was appointed on 30 August 1601 for associate professor of medicine. On February 8, 1611 he became a full professor of medicine, which earned him a lot of resentment and opponents. After the death of Peter Pauw he took over in 1618, the lectures on anatomy and surgery. He had initiated together with Ewaldus Schrevelius as " Collegium practicum " The Leiden University Hospital.

His collection of anatomical material, ethnographic art, portraits, letters and curious objects gained some importance. Due to physical infirmities he was asked on February 10, 1624 Adriaan Falcenburgus ( 1581-1650 ) as an assistant at the side. With this and other he often had to confront his little amusing remarks. Infamous here were especially his interpretations of blood circulation. Heurnius had also participated in the organizational tasks of the Leiden University and was in the years 1641/42 and 1648/49 Rector of the Alma Mater. 1650 Emeritus Heurnius and died at the age of 75 years.

From his 1602 marriage to Johanna van closed Swaenswyk son John was born († 1669) which was a Law degree, advice in Utrecht. In addition, a daughter Johanna, who was married to Lorenz Storm from The Hague.
