Otto Pöggeler

Otto Pöggeler ( born December 12, 1928 in Attendorn / Westphalia ) is a German philosopher.

Biography

Otto Pöggeler his doctorate in 1955 at the University of Bonn in the subject German by Johannes Hoffmeister with a thesis on " Hegel's critique of Romanticism " ( extended Munich 1999). 1964/65 he completed his habilitation in philosophy at the University of Heidelberg with Hans -Georg Gadamer. His habilitation thesis on " Hegel's early writings and the idea of ​​a Phenomenology of Spirit " was published by him in parts ( Hegel's Idea of a Phenomenology of Spirit, 1973; Hegel studies). Other parts used in new Pöggeler other contexts. 1961 Pöggeler editor of the newly established Hegel studies, in 1968 Professor of Philosophy and Director of the Hegel -Archiv at the Ruhr- University Bochum, where since then, published by the North Rhine- Westphalian Academy of Sciences and Arts in conjunction with the German Research Foundation Edition the collected works of Hegel is worked out. In 1973 he was a visiting professor at Pennsylvania State University, 1988 at the State University of New York at Stony Brook. Since 1977 Pöggeler is a full member of the Rhenish- Westphalian Academy of Sciences. 1978 to 1983 he was president of the German Society for Phenomenological Research, whose honorary member, he was then. In 1994 he was retiring. The Hegel -Archiv, he headed until 1997.

Research and teaching

Otto Pöggeler has worked in particular on the philosopher Georg Wilhelm Friedrich Hegel, Edmund Husserl and Martin Heidegger. For his own thinking are the phenomenology and hermeneutic philosophy is essential. He sees himself as a representative of a phenomenological "open hermeneutics ". This takes and holds truth as a historical event in a moving and open whole. Pöggelers research is aimed above all to the relationship between philosophy and politics, and the philosophy and art (Paul Celan, Paul Klee ). With Celan he formed a close friendship so that he could rely on his statements in many interpretations of the poems.
