Oulujärvi

The Oulujärvi [ ɔu̯lujærvi ] ( German also " Oulusee " ) located northwest of the town Kajaani, is the fourth largest lake in Finland, with a water surface area of 928 km ², which includes, in addition Kajaani also parts of the municipalities Paltamo, and Vaala. He has several tributaries, such as the Kajaaninjoki in Kajaani and the Kiehimänjoki Paltamo and drained via the Oulujoki in the Gulf of Bothnia.

Like most Finnish lakes, the Oulujärvi is shallow and has an average depth of 7 m. Also its lowest point is 35 m below the water level. The shallow depth allows for quick heating of the water. In the summer mainly attract the sandy beaches of Manamansalo who at 76 km ² the largest lake island in Finland, many bathers. Frozen over remains of Oulujärvi usually from late November to early May.
