Over-the-top content

The term over-the -top content (OTT ) refers to the free on-line transmission of video and audio content without an Internet service provider is involved in the control or distribution of the content.

To access a registry for content on the platform is usually not necessary. The contents are often provided by large media companies such as NBC Universal and News Corp and the associated individual transmitters. The offer thus represents an alternative to the popular Internet video portals dar.

Transmission

Although the internet service provider has knowledge of the transmitted IP packets, but he is not responsible for the copyright, viewing the material and the possible transfer of the contents. He is also not able to control this, but is liable only for proper transport of packets through its infrastructures provided. The OTT process can be viewed as a counterpart to the well-known IPTV offerings of the major Internet service provider ( Telekom Entertain or Vodafone TV). However, OTT only refers to content that is provided by a third party (such as Hulu or Netflix ). Funding is provided primarily by advertising.

Reception

Users will be able to OTT content via Internet-connected devices such as PCs, laptops, tablet PCs, set- top boxes and game consoles like the PlayStation 3, Nintendo Wii or Xbox 360 from Microsoft recourse. Access to the content is often done by means of a control of the IP address and therefore can be enabled country- typical or not.

Target

The OTT process is to offer a combination of TV and Internet content, so that the user only needs to use a medium.

Problems

The OTT process requires a sufficiently high bandwidth ( DSL) and therefore can not be applied to all Internet connections. Due to the different devices ( TV, smartphone, tablet ) with different resolutions and operating systems, the provider of OTT content must make an adjustment for their content, so that the contents can be shown correctly on all platforms.

Situation in Germany

In Germany, due to copyright and licensing issues OTT offerings with the latest offers even more rare. The largest German online video portal, which can be described as OTT offer is www.myvideo.tv. The content that can be offered over OTT are not worldwide, but have mostly been sold country- wide. Therefore, the users in Germany only has the ability of the media libraries ( First: library or ZDFmediathek ) to access the individual transmitters on their own productions.
