Overton is a city in Rusk County in the U.S. state of Texas in the United States.

Geography

The city is located in northeastern Texas, is in the east and around 90 km from Louisiana and has a total area of 17.5 km ², of which 0.1 km ² water surface.

History

The city was named after Frank Overton, an early settler of the area.

Demographic data

According to the census of 2000, there were 2,350 people in 906 households and 629 families. The population density was 135.2 inhabitants per km ². The racial makeup of the population is 100 % White.

Of the 906 households 31.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them. 53.2 % were married couples living together. 12.1% were single mothers and 30.5 % were non-families. 27.7 % of all households were single-person households, and 15.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.45 and the average family size amounted to 2.99.

25.7 % of the population were under 18 years old, 8.4 % from 18 to 24, 24.6% 25-44, 22.0% from 45 to 64, and 19.2 % who were 65 years or older. The average age was 38 years. For every 100 females of all ages were 87.5 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, 89.3 males.
