Oxyporhamphus micropterus

Oxyporhamphus is a genus of fish from the family of Halfbeak ( Hemirhamphidae ). They are small, from 17.5 to 18.5 centimeters long, elongated fish with pectoral fins, similar to the flying fish are enlarged. You lack the typical elongated lower jaw of the other Halbschnäblerarten.

Oxyporhamphus species are marine and live in the Red Sea, Indo-Pacific from the Arabian Sea and East Africa to Japan and Mexico to Peru, and the western and eastern Atlantic from North Carolina to Brazil and Cape Verde to Luanda.

System

Oxyporhamphus is classified depending on the author sometimes as basal Flying Fish ( Exocoetidae ) or as Halfbeak. A phylogenetic study looks Oxyporhamphus as Halfbeak within the genus Hemiramphus. There are two types:

  • Oxyporhamphus convexus ( Weber & de Beaufort, 1922)
  • Oxyporhamphus micropterus ( Valenciennes in Cuvier & Valenciennes, 1847)
