Oyala

Region

Oyala (also: Djibloho ) is the name of a new planned city in Equatorial Guinea, the seat of government should be.

Location

The city is taking shape on the Rio Wele in the hinterland of Equatorial Guinea, 180 km east-southeast of the port city of Bata and 78 kilometers north of Bidjabidjan in the province of Wele - Nzas. It is 454 m above the sea level.

Planning and construction

The government plans and built in the middle of undeveloped jungle a new city as the future seat of government. It should be the official residence of President, Government, administration, police and military leadership and thus replace the current capital Malabo. In Oyala are on an area of 81.5 km ² live later 160000-200000 people. This corresponds to about a quarter of the population in Equatorial Guinea; the exact population is not known.

A golf course, a university and a luxury hotel and six-lane highways were almost finished in 2013. In planning there are government buildings, a financial district and residential areas. 2010, only three " inner-city " Bridges and highways were partially completed or under construction (see picture left). You should connect the city with the new airport at Mengomeyen ( the home of the president ) and the strategic importance of the port city of Bata for the neighboring Gabon and throughout Central Africa develop. For the highways huge jungle areas were cleared and blasted corridors in the granite hill ( see picture left). The Portuguese Chamber of Commerce ( AICEP ) stated that the city should use renewable energy and sustainable.

Funding is provided through the AICEP. The plans come from a Portuguese architect's office. A report by the BBC suggested costs in the amount of several billion. By 2020, the city will be completed. The construction works are supported from Poland, Brazil and North Korea. To construction delays, it supposedly comes again and again also because Obiang building can be torn down, their views do not like him. In addition, all materials are imported.

Criticism of the construction project

The project of a new capital is attributed to the obsessive fear of the dictator Teodoro Obiang Nguema Mbasogo before riots and attacks. Since the general population does not benefit from actually immense wealth of the country ( oil and gas), the plan in the international press and the Equatorial Guinean opposition is criticized. In addition, the need for such a large city is questionable, because a large part of the population lives at sea. The sustainability of the city, which emphasizes the Portuguese Chamber of Commerce, may not match with the jungle clearings.
