Ozjasz Thon

Osias Thon ( born February 13, 1870 in Lemberg, Galicia, Austria - Hungary, † November 11, 1936 in Kraków ) was a writer, politician and rabbi in Krakow. As a student in Berlin, he was one of the founders of the Zionist Association Jung- Israel.

Life

Osias Thon, son of Moses Thon, studied Philosophy at the Friedrich Wilhelm University in Berlin and attended, among others, courses in Georg Simmel. He also attended the School for the Science of Judaism.

1892 belonged to the small group Thon Zionist -minded students, the Jewish- national club Jung- Israel founded under the chairmanship of Heinrich Loewe and in close contact with Nathan Birnbaum. First major importance in Zionist circles gained Thon 1896 with his seminal essay "On the historical and philosophical justification of Zionism ," which he published as a young doctor of philosophy in the magazine published by Heinrich Loewe Zion. As one of the first employees of Theodor Herzl, Max Nordau and Ahad Ha'am Thon was instrumental in the preparation and implementation of the first Zionist Congresses, where he also prominently appeared as a speaker.

The then 27 -year-old took over in 1897 the post of rabbi of the liberal Tempel Synagogue in Krakow. He participated in the publication of Przyszłość, the first Zionist magazine in Polish in Poland. Besides appeared in the published by Ha'am, Hebrew-speaking cultural magazine Haschiloach regular scientific papers Thon, among other things, Herbert Spencer, whose sociological essays he translated into Hebrew.

1919 Thon was elected to the Polish Sejm and participated in this context until 1931 active in the Polish domestic politics. Until a few years before his death in 1936 Thon was also next President of the District Committee for Western Galicia of the Zionist Organization, and until recently a member of the Zionist Action Committee.
