Anisic acid is methoxylated benzoic acid, methoxybenzoic acid and thus one that is both a carboxylic acid and an ether.
Occurrence
Anisic acid is found in small amounts (eg, vanilla) before the oil of anise and other plants.
Production and representation
Anisic acid can be obtained by reaction of 4- methoxyacetophenone with hypobromite ( Einhorn reaction ).
Another very simple synthesis of anisic acid, the oxidation of anisaldehyde with an oxidizing agent such as potassium permanganate.
Use
Anisic acid used for the preparation of anisic acid derivatives. It is bacteriostatic and was formerly used as an antiseptic, anti-inflammatory drug and a preservative.
Safety
The vapors of anisic acid can form (185 ° C, ignition temperature 280 ° C flash point) with air to form an explosive mixture.
